What it’s about

Becoming Athena

In a rural Mormon town in Utah, a non-religious girl struggles with spirituality and self-identity amongst her peers and within her dysfunctional family. To cope, she leans on science and Greek mythology, casting those around her with god-like traits, including the charming Mormon boy next door that she crowns as Apollo. Falling for him isn’t in her carefully calculated plans, but over the span of several years, they develop a bond that possesses the power to both heal her heart and break it at the same time.

Becoming Athena is a contemporary, coming-of-age YA story that marks one girl’s metaphorical evolution from girl to goddess.

Perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon, Mindy Kaling, and John Green.

Author

Katherine Lore

Katherine Lore has spent most of her life exploring her own imagination. She began writing poetry as a teen, but took a detour and earned a graduate degree before returning to her creative endeavours. She currently lives in Texas with her children, as well as a smug cat, and a dog that wants to be a florist. All her stories contain an element of magic, myth, or folklore. Fairy tales, she believes, are meant for every day. BECOMING ATHENA is her debut novel.

What I Thought

Thank you, NetGalley and Glass Goose Publishing for the eArc in exchange for an honest review.

As many book lovers do they base their next read on the synopsis of a book. Unfortunately what I thought I was getting and what I read were two different books. I believed that I would be getting a book about Greek Mythology not just snippets of God’s names and comparisons to the other characters here and there.

Had I known it was a coming of age novel about living in a Mormon community I wouldn’t have requested it. I’m not big into books about religion.
