What it’s about

“If she left me, I’m going to burn the whole fucking world down until I find her.”
WINTER
Sending him to prison was the worst thing I could’ve done. It didn’t matter that he did the crime or that I wished he was dead. Perhaps I thought I’d have time to disappear before he got out or he’d cool off in jail and be anything but the horror he was.
But I was wrong. Three years came and went too fast, and now he’s anything but calm. Prison only gave him time to plan.
And while I anticipated his vengeance, I didn’t expect this.
He doesn’t want to make me hurt. He wants to make everything hurt.
DAMON
First things first. Get rid of her daddy. He told them I forced her. He told them his little girl was a victim, but I was a kid, too, and she wanted it just as much as I did.
Step two… Give her, her sister, and her mother nowhere to run and no fuel to escape. The Ashby women are alone now and desperate for a knight in shining armour.
But that’s not what’s coming.
No, it’s time I listened to my father and took control of my future. It’s time I showed them all–my family, her family, my friends–that I will never change and that I have no other ambition than to be the nightmare of their lives.
Starting with her.
She’ll be so scared, she won’t even be safe in her own head by the time I’m done with her. And the best part is I won’t have to break into her home to do it.
As the new man of the house, I have all the keys.
What I Thought
*Before diving into the actual review, I wanted to share a quick side note:* I’ve been having a bit of a tough time with this book. I’m 10 chapters in, and it hasn’t quite grabbed me like the others. I’m not sure if it’s me or if it’s Damon. Only time will tell.
Have you ever picked up a book, struggled with it, put it down, read something else, then come back to it, only to find it’s one of the best things you’ve ever read and couldn’t put it down? That was my experience with “Kill Switch.”
I absolutely adore the dynamic between Damon and Winter, from when they were kids hiding in the fountain right up until the very end. Their relationship is incredibly endearing. Knowing Damon’s rough start in life from the previous books, it’s no surprise he turned out the way he did. But once we get to know Winter and see her interactions with him, it adds a whole new layer to their relationship. Both characters are heavily influenced by external forces—Winter by her father and her terrible sister, and Damon by his unusual upbringing. It’s no wonder he becomes close friends with Will, who’s also had a troubled life.
Initially, I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy this book, given that it’s centred around Damon, who wasn’t a major presence in the previous book about Kai and Banks. But the way it’s written made me develop a sense of pity for Damon. There are cracks in his tough exterior that only Winter seems to fill, and he knows it. Despite the fact that this book is about a pretty unlikable character, it ended up being incredibly sweet.
And then there’s the twist involving Rika—I did not see that coming at all. It’s funny to think about who pieced it all together beforehand. I didn’t expect it to be that person. Looking back, I wish I hadn’t put the book down initially. I’m glad I did, though, because it made the experience of picking it back up so much more rewarding. Now, I’m really excited for the next books in the series. I’m particularly looking forward to reading about Will dancing on the table. It sounds like it’s going to be a fun read.
If you haven’t read “Kill Switch” yet, I highly recommend giving it a chance. It might just surprise you, and Damon might not be as bad as he’s made out to be by others. Stick with it; it really does get better!
