What it’s about

BANKS
Buried in the shadows of the city, there’s a hotel called The Pope. Ailing, empty, and dark—it sits abandoned and surrounded by a forgotten mystery.
But you think it’s true, don’t you, Kai Mori? The story is about the hidden twelfth floor. The mystery of the dark guest who never checked in and never checks out. You think I can help you find that secret hideaway and get to him, don’t you?
You and your friends can try to scare me. You can try to push me. Because even though I struggle to hide everything I feel when you look at me—and have ever since I was a girl—I think maybe what you seek is so much closer than you’ll ever realize.
I will never betray him.
So sit tight.
On Devil’s Night, the hunt will be coming to you.
KAI
You have no idea what I seek, Little One. You don’t know what I had to become to survive three years in prison for a crime I would gladly commit again.
No one can know what I’ve turned into.
I want that hotel, I want to find him, and I want this over.
I want my life back.
But the more I’m around you, the more I realize this new me is exactly who I was meant to be.
So come on, kid. Don’t chicken out. My house is on the hill. So many ways in, and good luck finding your way out.
I’ve seen your hideaway. Time to see mine.
What I Thought
This is a series I wish I’d heard of before now, I can’t believe it has been out for. Some of you might be asking if I was living under a rock all this time since they came out in 2015 but in my defence, I wasn’t reading much then as I had 2 kids under 3 when this came out and my days were filled with Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom.
Kai was someone who intrigued me in the first book. He was the quiet one who kept his cards close to his chest and in this book, we discover his why. Once we find out his why it’s completely understandable why he is the way he is.
Kai’s whole purpose in this book is to find Damon who has disappeared after the events in the first book but instead of finding Damon, he bumps into a blast from the past from 6 years ago in the shape of Banks.
Banks and Kei were teenagers when they met unexpectedly in a church confessional box (I think that’s what they’re called at least) while Kai was revelling things he wouldn’t tell his friends not knowing there is a listening ear at first. Things evolve from there with Banks turning up to parties wherever the horsemen are. Banks has a bad habit of getting into trouble but tries her best to stay out of Damon’s way. He is rather possessive of her.
Banks tries to hide herself away by dressing in men’s hand-me-downs and in a way hiding in plain sight within Damon’s family home. She also doesn’t go to school but is incredibly smart and very very observant.
While Kai is looking for Damon he is aware of how close Damon and Banks are but isn’t aware of the relationship, unlike Michael. I personally think it’s because Kai is too close to the situation and can no longer see the woods for the trees. I believe he is only dense when it comes to Banks.
The whole situation with the Pope was one of those times where I knew there would be a point to it but couldn’t figure out why it was such a big deal knowing from the last book there would be a plot twist again.
This book was fast-paced and had some twists and turns I wouldn’t have accounted for but once again I couldn’t put it down I am only putting the series on hiatus for some Christmas reading but I will return to Thunder Bay with the Horsemen after some hopefully lighthearted Christmas reading which I have already reviewed but scheduled this after them.
